Reiki for Animals

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing therapy that originated in Japan in the late 1800s. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese words "rei," meaning universal, and "ki," meaning life force energy. It is based on the principle that when the body's natural energy flow is balanced and unobstructed, it is better able to heal, restore, and maintain wellbeing on physical, emotional, and energetic levels.

While Reiki has long been used with people, including in hospitals and clinical settings around the world, it has also proven to be a deeply effective therapy for animals. Animals are highly sensitive to energy, and many respond to Reiki with visible relaxation, calm, and openness.

Reiki for Animals

Animal Reiki is a certified specialty practice that adapts Reiki techniques specifically for all animals. As a certified Animal Reiki practitioner, I am trained to work with all species, from horses and livestock to dogs, cats, and small animals, meeting each animal where they are physically, emotionally, and energetically.

Unlike some therapies, Reiki does not require the animal to remain still or to tolerate extended physical contact. The practitioner works with light touch or, in some cases, from a short distance, allowing the animal to engage with the session on their own terms. Animals are remarkably good at directing a Reiki session. They will often shift position, lean in, or move away to indicate where they need attention and when they have received enough.

What Can Reiki Do for Your Animal?

Reiki supports the whole animal — body, mind, and spirit. Benefits can include:

  • Deep relaxation and stress relief
  • Reduced anxiety and fearfulness
  • Support for physical healing and recovery from injury or illness
  • Relief from chronic pain, particularly in older animals
  • Emotional healing from trauma, neglect, or significant life changes such as rehoming or loss
  • Improved behavior rooted in pain or anxiety
  • Comfort and peace during end-of-life care
  • Strengthened bond between animal and owner
  • Overall support for long-term health and vitality

Reiki is a wonderful complement to veterinary care and other bodywork therapies, and can be combined with massage or craniosacral therapy for a comprehensive wellness session.

Reiki and All Species

All animals, regardless of species, size, or temperament, have an energy system that can benefit from Reiki. Whether you have horses, livestock, dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, or other small animals, Reiki meets them where they are. No two sessions are alike because no two animals are alike. Some will lean in eagerly, others may be cautious at first and warm up gradually, and some (particularly prey animals) may prefer to receive energy from a slight distance rather than through direct touch. All of these responses are welcomed and respected. The animal always leads the session, and the practitioner follows.

This intuitive, animal-led approach makes Reiki one of the most versatile and universally accessible therapies available, suitable for animals of any age, health status, or history, including those who may be too fragile, fearful, or sensitive for more hands-on bodywork.

Reiki is offered as a complement to veterinary care, not a replacement for it. Please consult your veterinarian if your animal is experiencing health issues.
